What to expect in your newborn photoshoot - a session guide

Congrats! Your little one is on the way! Just like the moon, your baby would go through phases. Each of the phases of your baby’s life are so precious that documenting them is so rewarding.

What an amazing change in your life, whether it is your first baby, or second. There is no doubt that you would be physically and emotionally exhausted during the newborn phase. Yet, there are things that you will miss and look forward to experiencing again. Documenting that special newborn stage is very important, which is why our newborn photography sessions are so popular amongst new parents. Have you scheduled your newborn photography session yet?

Planning for your session

Your newborn’s photography session should be an exciting time for your family. But parents often find themselves worried and anxious about preparing themselves and their babies for the big occasion. With a little planning, you can relax and enjoy the session, knowing your baby will be in safe hands.

Best time for the photoshoot

I love to photograph babies when they are 5-15 days old. While yes, babies less than 15 days old are more likely to curl up into poses and stay asleep for longer durations, babies slightly older than that are fine too. So, to make sure you don’t miss the window for newborn photoshoot, I would encourage you to book your session in your third trimester.

5- 15 days is the best time for newborn photoshoot

Choose colors or themes

Organizing a newborn photography session - putting together the props, colors, outfits etc., - can feel like a big task. The good news is, share your interests & inputs with me and I will try to make your photography experience as fun, stress-free and memorable as possible. I pride myself on fully taking care of everything so that your session is easy and you get to enjoy your experience.

How to dress up for parent portraits?

Simplicity is the key for there is beauty in simplicity. I would suggest parents should wear something that makes them feel elegant and comfortable. Keep in mind the below things to look elegant and comfortable not only for your baby’s newborn session but also for any portrait session:

  1. Pick a color scheme: Choose no more than 2-3 colors that you will coordinate every ones outfits around.

  2. Keep it simple: The studio would be warm enough for the baby to be comfortable. Hence, simple and comfortable clothing will take most preference.

  3. Coordinate but don’t match: The perfect combination would be when you coordinate the outfits and not match them.

  4. Avoid huge prints and heavy jewelery: This is totally your personal choice but I would suggest to avoid anything that may look dated a few years from now.

During the session

What to bring for the session?

The list is short and simple:

  1. A diaper bag with standard contents - diapers, wipes, formula(if needed)

  2. Along with an extra pair of clothing for the baby, I would always suggest to carry an extra pair of clothes for parents. Because with babies, accidents may happen and I would want you to be comfortable should they happen.

  3. Last. But not least, Your Family, most importantly your baby :)

Session Length

You should expect to be at the studio for 1.5-3 hours for your session. Why so long? During this time, baby may need to be fed, soothed, diaper changed, etc – this is why the long session. Your baby will drive the session and we will go with the flow. Sometimes they may need some extra time to be soothed before they are ready for pictures. My goal is to get a variety of portraits of your new baby.

Sit back and relax

We know how beautiful it is to watch your baby sleeping, yawning, weeping, and expressing different emotions. These cute expressions are ones to be cherished. As a parent, you may have that urge to pick your child up with every grunt they make, and it can be hard to see someone else handling them. This is why it’s important to find a professional newborn photographer with experience and positive reviews.

After the session

Print your photos

You will very certainly love to see your family pictures in print. Believe me, the prints are a way to carry your memories for generations. Because, computers may die, phones may be outdated, hard drives may fail but paper doesn’t.
